Move it, Britain! Why National Fitness Day Matters (p.s. It’s Also Our Launch Day!)

What is National Fitness Day

Ever need a friendly push off the sofa?

National Fitness Day is exactly that.

It’s the UK’s biggest excuse to swap sitting for squats, Netflix for a neighbourhood walk, or at the very least, to remind yourself that moving your body feels good.

The What and the Why

Back in 2011, the charity ukactive.com spotted a problem. The UK was moving less, lifestyle illnesses were creeping up, and the NHS was picking up the bill.

Their solution?

A yearly national event that shouts one clear message: movement is essential, not optional.

By 2014, gyms, councils and big health organisations were all in. What started as a handful of events snowballed into thousands across the country.

Fast forward to today and ukactive partners with over 4,000 groups, from grassroots clubs to global companies, all sharing one mission – get Britain moving!

Why should you care?

Let’s keep it simple.

  • Your health loves it: Just 150 minutes of moderate activity a week cuts heart disease risk by up to 35% and type 2 diabetes by around 40%. It also keeps muscles strong, bones steady and moods brighter.
  • Your wallet loves it: Inactivity costs the UK close to £1 billion a year. Every step, stretch or cycle helps lift some of that weight off the NHS.
  • Your social life loves it: A family walk, a workplace plank-off or a school dance break – movement sticks better when it’s shared.

What’s happening this year

Mark it: Wednesday 24 September 2025. Expect free gym sessions, outdoor bootcamps, yoga in shopping centres, Zumba in town squares, school “shake-ups” and office challenges.

Some people will simply walk or cycle to work. Others will finally give that free class a go.

The theme for 2025 is “Powered by you” – a reminder that whether you’re an individual, a business or a school, you’re the spark that makes it happen.

The bigger picture

The World Health Organization says adults should aim for 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week. Yet one in four UK adults still falls short.

National Fitness Day helps shine a light on that gap, turning awareness into action. Campaigns like this show people new, fun ways to move – and prove that fitness doesn’t have to mean Lycra uniforms or marathon medals.

Why we’re backing it

Cver exists for the same reason National Fitness Day does – to show that fitness is doable, enjoyable and part of real life.

We’re here for interval walks squeezed into a lunch break, resistance moves that protect your bones, and quick tips to make mental health stronger too.

It’s not about picture-perfect transformations. It’s about sustainable wins that fit your week, not take it hostage.

Your invite

On 24 September, move in whatever way feels right for you. Walk to the shops. Dance in your kitchen. Try a class you’d normally scroll past. Or start small with ten minutes that are yours alone.

We’ll keep serving up the ideas, the science and the stories to keep you going long after the day is done.

National Fitness Day shows what happens when people move together – but it all starts with your choice to take that first step.

Want to stay motivated beyond the day?
